FOOD
Food is a digestible substance which consists of protein,vitamins, carbohydrates, fats and oil.
Food, when consumed by humans and animals, gives energy to the body to carry out various activities.
It also help sustain the life of a human being and animal and also improve growth and development in the body.
CLASSES OF FOOD
1. Carbohydrates: It is the energy giving food, which supplies the body with energy to carry out various activities. Foods rich in carb are: rice, bread, maize, yam, potatoes, etc.
2. Protein: It helps build up and repair body tissues, cells and muscles. Protein is a great muscle builder. Foods rich in protein are: beans, eggs, meat, fish, milk, chicken, cheese, and so on.
3. Vitamins: It boosts the immune system. It helps keep the body healthy with its nutritional effects. Vitamins does an excellent work in curing wounds or healing wound and making the bone’s stronger and firm. Vitamins are classified into two namely: Fat-Soluble and Water soluble. There are various types of vitamins: Vitamin A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D, E, K. Foods rich in vitamins: Fruits and Vegetables such as: Orange, spinach, tomatoes, watermelon, cabbage, pineapple, etc.
4. Minerals: These are the hidden or invisible inorganic substances found in food or the earth, in which the body requires for growth and development. Minerals can be classified as-zinc, calcium, iron, sodium etc. Foods rich in minerals: Nuts and seeds, mushroom, whole grain, beans, etc.
5. Fats: Fat helps store energy in the body and acts as the prime form of storage. Fat is an oily or glossy substance/material found in tissues of animal or plants. Fats are very essential in the body, to keep the human body fit. Take note, excess of fat, most especially saturated fats lead to various health issues like high cholesterol, heart disease etc. Foods rich in fats are-Butter, vegetable oil, nuts, and so on.
