Religion does not have an acceptable or suitable definition. Many scholars have tried to define religion but it’s not yet universally acceptable. Either it is seen as originating from consecrated histories, otherwise known as ‘true life stories’ or ‘myths’. However, based on observations and history it seems scholars define religion as per their experiences or relationship with their respective supreme being.

In another perspective, religion can be traced down to human belief, culture and worship of supernatural being. As every religion has its specific practices, doctrines, system of worship, etc, so does every culture has its own system of belief. Some of the known religions with cultural background are cases of Africans practice the: (African Traditional Religion), Jews practicing (Judaism), Arabia practicing (Islamism), Romans/ Greek practicing (Christianity). In all of these, there are common reference point which includes a supreme being, holy ground, sanctity and divinity, profanity, levels of spirituality, faith, adherents and so on. Also, religious practices includes the like of prayers, worships, music, art, rituals, festivals, dance, etc.

In one way or the other, every man seems to be tied to his personal belief and system of worship. This is because religion sometimes eats deep into a man to the point that such becomes fanatical, religious bigot and acting strangely against the good of the acclaimed religion. In the contrary, it structures a man’s life with good morals like: harmony, peace, love, respect, and to be ethical.

Based on my little experience and knowledge I discovered that dialogue or discussion on religious subjects often times leads to arguments and provocations due to different beliefs and experiences… which ought not to be!

Look out for more on the good and the bad of religion to human existence.

  1. We need to learn to accept people’s beliefs and religions. Though their practices may be contrary to what we believe in, that is why we are different people
